  • Slowing Down to the Speed of Life and Learning May 17, 2013
Sandra Herbst and I are in New Zealand. We spent a Mother’s Day Sunday in Wellington, which is the capital and has about 500,000 people. The pace of life here and in other communities in New Zealand is remarkable. We spent time at the waterfront market and walked to the parliament buildings. We took the cable car up to the botanical gardens where we enjoye […]

  • Preparing Diagnostic Assessments Mar 21, 2013
Recently Melissa was on our members' site and asked me to respond to the following question, “Can you explain the best method of preparing a math diagnostic assessment?”When one considers the best method of preparing a math diagnostic assessment, it is important to ask a few questions:                  1. What is the purpose?                  2. Who is […]

  • Report Card Planning Mar 14, 2013
Sarah is working on a project related to reporting. (A while ago I tweeted about an interesting blog by Andrew Campbell that you may also want to read.) As I reflected on the questions she posed, I invited her to get in touch so we could have a longer conversation. And, I posted the following quick comment... I'm happy to talk some more about reporting. […]

  • Are you a primary teacher? Do you wonder if AFL can make a difference? Feb 18, 2013
A few months ago I had the opportunity to celebrate the successful defense of Nancy Barr's thesis. She is a primary teacher in Saskatoon. She focused her research on primary children and their growing ability to articulate their understandings of writing. It is a fascinating qualitative study. It clearly shows the difference that assessment for learning […]

Preparing Students to Share Evidence of Learning

While formal reports will be a part of how teachers communicate, students also need to be involved in sharing their learning with others. Numbers and other symbols can only tell part of the story; everyone learns when student learning – illustrated through work samples and demonstrations – is the focus of the conversation.

These learning conversations and celebrations might be online conferences where students showcase their learning for parents and others. They might be at-home conferences or at-school gatherings where students show parents and others what they’ve been learning and what they’ve accomplished.
Even experienced teachers prepare thoughtfully knowing that preparation, especially with young children, can be challenging.

For some people it is helpful to have an image of what this might look like. In this video clip, Alison Carveiro, a teacher of 6- to 7-year-olds, works with a group of first grade students to select work samples from mathematics that show their growth and progress.

Please watch this video with great appreciation for Alison and her students as they share their classroom with us. You will be asked to register for free access as this provides a safe and respectful place for classroom footage to be shared – your contact information will not be shared or used for any other purpose.

As you watch, consider how you help prepare your students to show their learning. We invite you to share your successful strategies with us in the comment window.

All our best,

Anne Davies and Sandra Herbst
